The discovery of Stevia by Giacomo Moisés Santiago Bertoni

The Swiss naturalist Giacomo Moisés Santiago Bertoni made in 1884 on the banks of the Parana River in Paraguay near the border with Brazil down and discovered the honey sheet also called Caa-hee. In 1905 the stevia plant was renamed in honor of the discoverer Giacomo Moisés Santiago Bertoni and the chemist Ovidio Rebaudi in Stevia rebaudiana Bertoni. Rebaudi isolated and named as the first sweet stevia ingredients of the leaves of the stevia plant. The description of stevioside in its current form dates back to the French chemist M. Bridel and R. Laveille in 1931.

Unlike the Western world, it took a long time to the U.S. food and drug regulatory authority FDA has approved steviol glycosides in 2008.
